Chapter Twenty-Two

JAMES

Twenty minutes earlier…

Uncle Anthony had us meet in the conference room. Not just any conference room, but the conference room.

The space was enormous, a circular room with a circular table in the middle. When I was a kid coming here with Dad, the place always reminded me of some kind of combination of King Arthur’s court and a James Bond villain’s secret lair.

When it was just normal family business, Anthony liked to meet at one of his favorite restaurants around the city. But when the meeting was here, at the conference room, that was his way of saying it was serious fucking business—like a parent calling for their kid by their full name.

Various lieutenants were seated around the table, Anthony at the far end and Paul next to him. A serious-as-hell look was on Anthony’s face.

“There you are,” he said. “Come on—sit down.”

He gestured to the open seat across from him. I sat down and nodded to one of the guards in attendance—he knew this meant to bring me a drink.

“You figure out why I decided to throw this party yet?” he asked.

“Because you’ve been practicing some dance moves you saw on YouTube and have been itching for a chance to show them off?”

A few laughs sounded out from around the table. I normally avoided busting Anthony’s balls like this in front of the guys, but I had to do something to remind him that I was in charge. After all, it hadn’t been lost on me that whatever he might say, him throwing this party and calling an all-hands-on-deck meeting was him trying to flex in his own way.

Anthony shot a hard glare around the room, each of the guys shutting up as soon as his eyes fell onto them. Silence returned, the music from the events hall faint and muffled through the door.

“Cute,” he said. “Really fucking cute. I’m glad to see that you think this whole thing’s a joke.”

“I don’t think it’s a joke,” I said. “But to be honest, I don’t really know what ‘it’ refers to.”

“You kidding?” asked Anthony. “We’re on the brink of war with him!”

“Were on the brink of war,” I said. “I had a meeting with him, got him to cool off for a while.”

I wasn’t going to bring up exactly what I’d done to get him to back off, what promises I’d made. That could all come later.

“Whatever you did,” said Anthony, “it’s temporary. I know for a fucking fact that Glass wants what we have, and he wants us out of the picture so he can get it. Diplomacy’s not going to cut it, James—we need to start preparing for war.”

“We could have peace,” I said. “If we play it smart. Everyone just wants their own little piece of Vegas, and as long as we’re not stepping on one another’s toes, we can all live side by side.”

Anthony shook his head. “Unbelievable that you think that,” he said. “You sound naïve, like a fucking kid.”

“Excuse me?” I asked, my tone firm.
